It was extremely disappointing. Did any thoughts creep into your mind about your own ceremony? For sure. I was trying to take it all in, see how things were done and what people were saying and all that kind of stuff.
It was really well done. I was really impressed, and the Sedins did a great job with their speeches and the way they welcomed everybody who was there from out of town. But the nerves started to get to me a little just thinking about what was ahead for me. The last time we talked about this retirement ceremony, it was months away. Are you getting excited?
So, getting ready for the speech, I want to make sure that it comes out the right way and it strikes the right tone. Roberto Luongo will be the first FlaPanthers player to have his number retired by the franchise on Saturday night. Each player will wear this decal on their helmet Saturday. As important as your family is to you, how exciting will it be to share this grand moment with all of them? They are the key to this.
That, family. Well, no one wears No. But of course. It does mean a lot to me, being the first Florida player to have his number there. If I would have told you in , after you had been traded to Vancouver, that Florida would retire your number, what would you have said? No way. But who knew I would come back eventually? But things changed pretty quickly in those last couple days. Listen, when they did tell me the trade was done, I was honestly shocked.
I was surprised I was traded and was very surprised it was to the Panthers. You played for three teams but made your mark with Florida and Vancouver. The Canucks could, down the road, honor you as well. How would that feel? Both of those teams were a huge part of my career and my life, right? I feel extra lucky to have been able to enjoy both sides of that.
You watch the game from up high these days. How much do you miss being part of the game as a player? This has been great.
I think being able to do what I am doing has really helped me in that regard. I am doing something that I love. I was excited being part of trade-deadline week, being around the team, the daily transactions. This has been an easy transition for me. What was it like being on the other side of the trade deadline for the first time and seeing and hearing how things get done? You know, it was great.
It was exciting. It was funny because there were times where you would go hours without hearing anything, then three or four things happened all at once. A lot of it is just talking, kicking tires and all that kind of stuff. It gets pretty intense, but it was fun. It was fun to be part of it. Before Leo departed for his duties there, he spent time around his brother in an effort to help him get ready for the season that starts for Florida at home on Thursday night.
He knows how much effort and hard work I've put into this craft over the last 10 years. And when we talk, he knows that I know what I'm talking about. That was evident on the day that Leo Luongo's preseason duties with the NHL club were ending this fall.
