In its bottom, the calmness of the water is interrupted by rocky formations that have created seven or eight small ponds with an environment filled with life, plants and fish. In the narrowest area, they are located five meters away from each other. It is said that it took between 5 to 15 million years to form, a period that belongs to the the Quaternary and Tertiary Miocene.
Even though the place was discovered by Check and Nicaraguan geologists a few years ago December , the Somoto Canyon was declared a protected area, under the category of National Monument.
The interest to visit the area has increased as time passes. Very friendly and communicative staff of SCT and we had a very good guide Noel. We did the 6 hour trip for 30 USD per person. We loved the trip, hiking, wandering, swimming, enjoying. Though other guides might be cheaper we decided to go for a professional and well known option just in case something would happen during the tour.
The guide give lots of details about plants, animals, history and was very careful with our movements. We had lunch at the end of the tour which did not really like. We ordered fried chicken and got a la plancha, tables with lots of flies. During the trip we got a banana and some cookies. Could provide something salty as well for this price.
